Story

Gandhi is a 1982 British-Indian biographical drama film about the life of Mahatma Gandhi. Directed by Richard Attenborough, it stars Ben Kingsley in the title role. The film covers major events in Gandhi's life, from his childhood in India to his assassination and funeral in 1948. Through his political activism, he becomes a leader of India's independence movement against British rule. Gandhi's efforts to end discrimination and poverty lead to civil disobedience, including the Salt March, which brings worldwide attention to the cause. With the help of other prominent figures, such as Jawaharlal Nehru and Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Gandhi succeeds in gaining Indian independence, albeit with the formation of a separate Muslim state. In spite of the violence that follows Partition, Gandhi continues to fight for peace and unity among Hindus and Muslims. He is assassinated by a Hindu extremist in 1948. The film shows how Gandhi's non-violent philosophy drastically changed the course of history.
