Story

Manto is a 2018 Indian biographical drama film directed by Nandita Das. It is based on the life of renowned Indo-Pakistani writer Saadat Hasan Manto. The film follows the life of Manto, from his early days in Bombay to his move to Lahore post-partition and his struggles with mental illness and alcoholism. It highlights how Manto's controversial work is often misunderstood and met with criticism, yet he still stands strong in his beliefs about truth and justice. The film is set against the backdrop of India-Pakistan partition, which had devastating effects on the lives of people from both countries. Through Manto's writings, the film shines a light on the politics of that era and how it affected everyday life. While the film is based on facts, it also portrays the artist's inner struggle and his fight for artistic freedom. In conclusion, Manto is a compelling story of resilience in the face of adversity, a celebration of art and a reminder of the power of truth and justice.
