It started with Apple Studios setting their sights on the stars in March 2022, announcing a $100 million film titled "Project Artemis." This space-age drama boasted a stellar cast with Scarlett Johansson and Chris Evans, helmed by director Jason Bateman. Bateman hinted at a title change in May, but things took a sharper turn in June when he left the project due to creative disagreements. Enter Greg Berlanti, ready to take the director's chair for his first project since "Love, Simon" in 2018.

This directorial switch, combined with scheduling conflicts, forced Evans to depart the film. In July, Channing Tatum stepped up to fill the leading role. The cast continued to take shape with the addition of Jim Rash in September, followed by Ray Romano, Anna Garcia, and Woody Harrelson in the coming months.

Filming blasted off in Atlanta by late October 2022, with a call for extras to portray NASA personnel and even FBI agents. As the project neared its December 2023 launch date, the title shed its "Project Artemis" moniker. The official name remained under wraps until April 2024, when it was finally revealed to be "Fly Me to the Moon." Composer Daniel Pemberton was also confirmed to score the film.

Remembering their successful partnership on "Napoleon," Apple Studios teamed up with Sony Pictures in December 2023 for a theatrical release. Originally planned for streaming, strong test screenings convinced them to take it to the big screen. "Fly Me to the Moon" is now set for a global theatrical rollout starting July 5th in South Africa, with staggered releases throughout July in other territories.
