Story

In the heart of the roaring 1920s, a young woman named Gertrude Trudy Ederle dreams of defying limitations. Born and raised in New York City as a child of immigrant parents, Trudy hones her innate swimming talent helped by her older sister and trainers. "Young Woman and the Sea" chronicles her journey from a swimming prodigy to a history maker.

Fueled by an unwavering spirit and a flicker of rebellion against a society that often underestimated women, Trudy pushes boundaries. She conquers local competitions, ultimately claiming a place on the 1924 Olympic Games team. This victory, however, is just the beginning. Trudy sets her sights on an audacious goal – becoming the first woman to ever swim across the English Channel, a treacherous 21-mile stretch of icy water known for its unpredictable currents and unforgiving tides. It was not surprising the press gave her the well deserved moniker "Queen of the Waves".

It was not surprising the press gave her the well deserved moniker "Queen of the Waves".

The film explores the challenges Trudy faces. Dismissive comments from the press, doubts from trainers, and the sheer physical demands of the feat all threaten to derail her dream. Yet, Trudy finds strength in the unwavering support of her sister and her unwavering belief in herself.

Training becomes her life, each stroke a testament to her determination. The film captures the grueling physical and mental preparation Trudy endures, pushing her body to its limit and confronting the fear of the unknown that lurks beneath the waves.

On a crisp summer day in 1926, Trudy stands poised at the edge of history. Clad in a daring two-piece swimsuit, defying the traditional one-piece attire of the time, she plunges into the icy water. The film depicts the harrowing journey across the channel, where Trudy battles not just the elements but also self-doubt and the immense pressure of expectation.

After 14 grueling hours, Trudy emerges from the water, a triumphant figure etched against the dawn. "Young Woman and the Sea" celebrates her historic achievement, a victory not just for herself but for all women athletes who dared to dream beyond limitations. It's a story of unwavering grit, the power of defying expectations, and the indelible mark one woman can leave on the world with a single, extraordinary feat.

The Movie Report

Fired up by the spirit of competition, Gertrude Ederle and Helen Wainwright, both backed by the Women's Swimming Association, set their sights on conquering the English Channel in 1925. But fate intervened - injury forced Wainwright to withdraw, leaving Ederle undeterred. Determined to chase her dream solo, Ederle sought guidance from Jabez Wolffe, a veteran of (and perhaps a little obsessed with) the Channel, having attempted the swim a staggering 22 times. Their training culminated in Ederle's first attempt at the grueling swim in August 1925, but disqualification dashed her hopes. Refusing to be defeated, Ederle returned to New York and honed her skills under coach Bill Burgess.

A year later, on August 6th, 1926, she returned to the Channel and this time, triumphed. Her victory not only shattered a record that stood until 1950, but made her the first woman to ever conquer the treacherous waters – a feat previously achieved by only five men. A year later, on August 6th, 1926, she returned to the Channel and this time, triumphed. Her victory not only shattered a record that stood until 1950, but made her the first woman to ever conquer the treacherous waters – a feat previously achieved by only five men. Ederle's accomplishment resonated across the globe. Upon returning to Manhattan, she was showered with confetti in a ticker-tape parade, a testament to her groundbreaking achievement (see black and white poster in this section). Later, she even dabbled in the world of cinema and vaudeville, showcasing her adventurous spirit beyond the pool.

Ederle's spirit remained unbroken through a difficult period when financial struggles during the Great Depression plagued a large part of the population. When Ederle passed away in 2003 at the age of 98, she left behind a legacy of grit, determination, and a reminder that women are capable of doing anything they set their mind to.

The "Young Woman and the Sea" movie journey was a long one. Originally planned for Paramount with Lily James as the lead, the rights moved to Disney in 2020 and eventually cast Daisy Ridley. Filming happened in May-June 2022, and after considering a Disney+ release, it was ultimately chosen for a limited theatrical release in May 2024, strategically timed for the Summer Olympics. Interestingly, despite the theatrical release elsewhere, the movie won't be shown in Canadian theaters.
