Story

Umrao Jaan is a 2006 Indian romantic drama film directed by J.P. Dutta. It stars Aishwarya Rai, Abhishek Bachchan and Shabana Azmi in the lead roles. The film is based on the 1905 Urdu novel Umrao Jaan Ada written by Mirza Hadi Ruswa. The story revolves around Umrao Jaan (Aishwarya Rai), an attractive courtesan living in a small town in 19th-century India. She was kidnapped as a young girl and sold to a brothel owner. Over time she grows into a beautiful and talented dancer, singer and poet. Despite her success, she yearns for freedom and true love. She eventually finds it when she meets Nawab Sultan (Abhishek Bachchan). However, their relationship is doomed when they are forced to part ways due to circumstances.
