The Making of Twister (2024) In the summer of 2024, a new breed of twister roared onto the silver screen. Titled simply "Twisters," this film wasn't a straight-up remake of the 1996 classic, but rather a standalone sequel, a chance to revisit the thrilling world of storm chasing in a modern context. The project's origins trace back to 2020. Universal Pictures, the international distributor of the original "Twister," began talks for a reimagining.

At the helm was Joseph Kosinski, envisioned as both writer and director. Producer Frank Marshall, who also worked on the original, was set to return alongside Sara Scott. But whispers of a different vision emerged in 2021. Helen Hunt, the original film's lead, expressed a desire to develop a true sequel, one she would write and potentially direct. Unfortunately, the studio didn't share her vision. Fast forward to October 2022, and "Twisters" was back on track with a script by Mark L. Smith and Marshall as producer.

Interestingly, there were hopes of Helen Hunt returning, this time playing the daughter of her and the late Bill Paxton's characters. This new iteration of "Twisters" dared to tackle a real-world issue: climate change. "It's true," explained screenwriter Mark L. Smith. "I spoke with many storm experts and chasers... and it appears tornadoes themselves are affected by climate change. Tornado Alley is expanding, and the storms are getting more violent. We wanted to highlight these causes and effects." By December 2022, Lee Isaac Chung, known for directing the acclaimed "Minari," was confirmed as the film's director.

Universal would handle North American release, while Warner Bros. took the reins internationally, a reversal from the original film's distribution arrangement. With a fresh story, a talented director, and a timely message about climate change, "Twisters" promised to be more than just a nostalgic throwback. It was poised to be a thrilling cinematic experience that would captivate audiences while prompting reflection on our changing environment.
