Story

The Householder is a 1963 Indian comedy-drama film directed by Merchant Ivory Productions. It follows the story of Prem, a young man from an upper middle class family in India. He is expected to marry, but he instead falls in love with a woman who is a poor student. His parents disapprove of this and try to arrange a marriage for him. In response, Prem decides to take charge of his own life and assert his independence. The film follows his journey as he discovers the joys and difficulties of living on his own. He also faces the cultural barriers that exist between his family and the woman he has chosen to love. Ultimately, Prem learns that life is about making choices and that one must accept the consequences of those choices. Through his experience, Prem finds a newfound appreciation for the value of family and tradition.
