The Movie Report

The Bikeriders: A Bumpy Road to Release

"The Bikeriders," a film chronicling the rise and fall of a 1960s Chicago motorcycle club, had a journey as turbulent as its subject matter.

Conception and Development:

Director Jeff Nichols had dreamt of a biker film for years. Finally, in 2022, he penned the script and secured New Regency's backing. The film's title pays homage to a famous 1967 photography book by Danny Lyon.

Casting and Production:

An impressive ensemble cast came together in August 2022, with stars like Jodie Comer, Austin Butler, and Tom Hardy leading the pack. Filming kicked off in Cincinnati that October and wrapped by December.

Release Delays and a New Route:

Originally slated for a December 2023 release by 20th Century Studios, the film hit a roadblock due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. Unable to promote the film, the release was scrapped. However, Focus Features swooped in, acquiring global distribution rights in November 2023.
