Story

Shatranj is a 1993 Indian drama film directed by Satyajit Ray. It tells the story of two aristocrats in the court of a powerful king, set in the pre-independence era of Awadh. The two friends, Mirza Sajjad Ali (Sanjeev Kumar) and Mir Roshan Ali (Saeed Jaffrey), are well known for their love of shatranj, or chess, and often spend days playing it in the palace gardens. The king, Wajid Ali Shah (Vijay Crishna), is generally unconcerned with the affairs of his court, preferring instead to indulge in poetic musings and the opulence of his palace. He is unaware of the political unrest and discontent that is brewing amongst his people. When he learns of the British forces advancing on the kingdom, he realizes that the kingdom's fate is inevitable and resigns himself to accepting this as his destiny. Unable to bear the thought of his kingdom's demise, the two friends decide to take matters into their own hands and make a desperate attempt to save it. They devise a plan to keep the king dis...
