Story

Shakuntala is a 1943 Indian mythological film directed and produced by V. Shantaram, based on the Sanskrit play Abhijñānaśākuntalam (The Recognition of Shakuntala) by Kalidasa. It starred Shanta Apte, Master Vinayak and Baburao Pendharkar in lead roles. The story revolves around Shakuntala, an abandoned child who is adopted by a sage and grows up in his ashram. She falls in love with King Dushyant, who visits her while hunting. After a misunderstanding, Dushyant leaves without recognizing Shakuntala, but she soon gives birth to their son Bharata. When Dushyant returns, he is presented with a token of recognition that proves their relationship and reunites them. The film ends with Shakuntala and Dushyant happily reunited.
