Bikini Bottom faces catastrophe when the entire underwater city is mysteriously lifted from the ocean. Sandy Cheeks and SpongeBob SquarePants find themselves stranded, their beloved home and friends in jeopardy. Their daring adventure leads them to Sandy's Texan roots where they must enlist the help of her family to rescue Bikini Bottom. Confronting a cunning and ruthless CEO who has sinister plans for the underwater world, Sandy and SpongeBob embark on a high-stakes mission to save their home and restore it to its rightful place beneath the waves.

The concept of a SpongeBob SquarePants spin-off film emerged in March 2020 when ViacomCBS announced plans for two such projects for Netflix. Fast forward to May 2021, a Sandy Cheeks-centric movie was officially in development for Nickelodeon's streaming platform. This hybrid live-action and animated film, directed by Liza Johnson from a script by Kaz and Tom J. Stern, initially faced production challenges, including script rewrites and a change of filming location.

In February 2022, Nickelodeon CEO Brian Robbins revealed plans for three SpongeBob spin-off films, exclusively for Paramount+. However, the Sandy Cheeks film's release destination shifted to Netflix in April 2023. The same month brought casting announcements, including both returning SpongeBob voice actors and new additions like Wanda Sykes and Johnny Knoxville.

Before its official release, the entire film was leaked online in January 2024 the official release however was on Netflix on August 2, 2024.
