Romance is a 1983 French film directed by Chen Kaige. The story follows the lives of two young lovers, Xiaoxian and Shouhua, as they fall deeply in love with each other. In order to be together, they must face the disapproval of their families and society. Xiaoxian's father disapproves of her relationship and pressures her to break it off. She refuses and leaves home to join the military, while Shouhua joins the Communist Youth League. Despite the obstacles they face, their love only grows stronger. When Xiaoxian returns home, their relationship is put to the test when she discovers that Shouhua has become involved with another woman. In the end, the couple reunites and gets married. Romance highlights the difficult decisions young people must make when pursuing their dreams and the power of true love.
