Nishant 1975

Nishant is an Indian film directed by Shyam Benegal. It tells the story of a young village schoolteacher named Shankar (Girish Karnad). Shankar is a progressive man who strives to bring education and change to his village, despite facing resistance from the village elders. He also falls in love with a beautiful girl from the village, Bharati (Smita Patil). Despite their love, they are unable to get married due to caste restrictions. Eventually, Shankar's efforts to bring education and enlightenment to the village are successful, but at a high cost. In the end, Shankar and Bharati are able to get married and live happily ever after. The movie explores themes such as caste and gender discrimination, oppression and how education can bring about positive social change.
