Mother India is a 1957 Indian epic drama film, directed by Mehboob Khan and starring Nargis, Sunil Dutt, Rajendra Kumar, and Raaj Kumar. The film is a remake of Mehboob's earlier film Aurat (1940). Set in rural India, Mother India follows the story of Radha, a young village woman, who fights for her husband and children against a malicious money lender. The story begins with Radha being married to a poor farmer, Shamu, at a young age. After a few years of hard work, Shamu manages to pay off his debt to the money lender, but is later killed in an accident. With no other options, Radha is forced to take on her husband’s debt and works hard to pay it off. Her struggles become even greater when the money lender demands more than what was originally owed. Despite these challenges, Radha perseveres and eventually pays off the loan. In the end, she is reunited with her long lost sons who had run away from home to escape their mother’s burden.
