Margarita with a Straw 2014

Margarita with a Straw is a drama film centered around Laila, an 18 year old girl with cerebral palsy. She moves from India to New York to attend college and experiences newfound freedom. While in college, she discovers her sexuality and experiments with her identity as a disabled person. She falls in love with Khanum, a blind woman, causing her to confront her parents’ conservative beliefs. In the end, Laila finds acceptance from her family and learns to express herself freely. Despite her disability, she discovers that life is full of possibilities and that limitations are only what we make of them. The film emphasizes that people with disabilities can lead fulfilling lives if they are accepted for who they are.
