Junoon 1979

Junoon tells the story of a rural landowner, Pandit Chatur Singh (Shashi Kapoor), and his family living in pre-independence India. Chatur is a strong believer in the caste system and is an adversary to those who do not follow it strictly. He has a daughter, Shushma (Shabana Azmi), who is in love with a young man from a lower caste. When Chatur finds out about this, he decides to marry her off to an upper caste man. Despite her protests, Shushma is forced to go through with the arranged marriage. However, she runs away on the night of the wedding and is taken in by a revolutionary group fighting for Indian independence. The revolutionaries take her in as their own and teach her to fight for justice. They also give her a new name: Junoon. As the story progresses, Junoon takes part in daring raids against British forces and emerges as a symbol of freedom and justice for her people. In the end, her father eventually comes to accept her and her newfound beliefs.
