Vikram Rathore, a former Indian soldier, is wrongfully charged for crimes he did not commit. His son Azad, as jailer of a women’s prison in Mumbai wants to clear his father’s name. The son forms a women’s gang comprising Lakshmi, Eeram, Ishkra, Kalki, Helena, and Janhvi, and pursues vigilante justice to honor the promise he made to his mother Aishwarya. The gang runs afoul of senior police officer Narmada Rai, who is already suspicious of their activities, and Kaali Gaikwad, one of the largest global weapon’s dealers.

Shah Rukh Khan and Tamil film director Atlee were rumored to be collaborating on a new project at the end of 2019 and as a result “Jawan” was finally announced in June 2022.

Atlee co-wrote the script with S. Ramana Girivasan, and Sumit Arora contributed the dialogues. Atlee has retained most of his regular technicians for the film, including cinematographer G. K. Vishnu, editor Ruben, art director T. Muthuraj, and stunt director Anal Arasu. Spiro Razatos, Craig Macrae, Yannick Ben, Kecha Khamphakdee, and Sunil Rodrigues have also been hired as stunt directors.

The dance choreographers for the film are Farah Khan, Vaibhavi Merchant, Shobi, and Lalitha.

Mukesh Chhabra was the casting director for the film. Shah Rukh Khan was reported to play a dual role, as father and son, Deepika Padukone joined the cast to shoot a special skit and Sanjay Dutt performed a cameo during an action sequence.
