A sequel to the 2000 blockbuster Gladiator was a long time coming. The original discussions in 2001 explored the possibility of a prequel or a sequel. There were also fantastical elements considered, including a resurrected Maximus as an immortal warrior battling Jesus Christ.
These ideas were ultimately abandoned. Development stalled in the 2000s due to financial difficulties and the challenge of bringing back a deceased Maximus. In 2017, Ridley Scott reignited interest in the project and by 2018, Paramount Pictures greenlit the sequel with Scott back as director.
The story shifted to Lucius, now a young man, and took place 25-30 years after the first film. In 2023 Paul Mescal was recruited for the lead role. Other notable additions included Denzel Washington, Connie Nielsen reprising her role as Lucilla, and Pedro Pascal. Filming took place in Morocco, Malta, and the UK, facing setbacks due to a fire during filming and the Hollywood labor disputes.

The musical score is by Harry Gregson-Williams, replacing the original composer Hans Zimmer. Gladiator II will be released internationally on November 15, 2024, but US and Canadian theaters will be able to play the film on November 22.
