Story

Max Bernal (played by Bobby Cannavale) is a juggling act personified. A stand-up comedian trying to make audiences roar with laughter, he also shares a home with his gruff father (Robert De Niro). Co parenting Ezra his autistic son, (newcomer William Fitzgerald), with his ex-wife (Rose Byrne), proves a bit of challenge.

Life throws Max a curveball when he's forced to make some tough choices about Ezra's future. This sets them off on a spontaneous cross-country road trip, a journey that unexpectedly strengthens the bond between father and son.

The cast includes Vera Farmiga, Rainn Wilson (Dwight Schrute, The Office), and Whoopi Goldberg, and Tony Goldwyn in a cameo appearance who is also the director. It's a heartwarming story about a family navigating life's complexities with humor, compassion, and a whole lot of heart.

Laughter and tears mix as Max and Ezra learn to understand each other better, forging a deeper connection that will stay with them long after the road trip...

The Movie Report

The seed of the story was planted years ago in the heart of writer Tony Spiridakis. Inspired by his own experiences raising a son with autism during a difficult divorce, Writer Toy Spiridakis wanted to create a film that celebrated acceptance over "fixing." He poured his story onto the page, crafting a script that resonated deeply with his friend, actor Tony Goldwyn. After years of revisions and drafts, Goldwyn read the final screenplay and knew he had to be at the helm, directing "Ezra" to life.

With an original title of "Inappropriate Behavior" Filming started in September 2022, with the bustling streets of Westwood and Jersey City serving as backdrops for the story. From the very beginning, the filmmakers knew they wanted an actor with autism to portray the central character. 15-year-old William Fitzgerald with dreams of starting a YouTube channel sent in an audition tape, not expecting much, but his talent shone through, landing him the coveted role of Ezra.

The casting magic continued with Robert De Niro joining the cast. De Niro, with one of his own children on the autism spectrum, felt a deep connection to the film's message. Whoopi Goldberg was another casting coup. Goldwyn simply reached out, and she agreed to be part of the project even before reading the script – a testament to the power of the story.

To ensure authenticity, "Ezra" welcomed autistic crew members onto the set, fostering a truly inclusive environment. Several cast members also had personal connections to autism within their families. The filmmakers didn't stop there. Throughout production, they screened different versions of the film for the autism community, incorporating valuable feedback to ensure an accurate and respectful portrayal.

"Ezra" is more than a movie; it's a collaborative effort fueled by personal experiences, a desire for understanding, and a celebration of the beautiful complexities of family.
