Story

The film is set against the backdrop of the Indian Emergency, a period of 21 months from 1975 to 1977 when Prime Minister Indira Gandhi suspended civil liberties and imposed one-party rule. The film tells the story of Gandhi's rise to power, her decision to declare the Emergency, and the impact of the Emergency on the lives of ordinary Indians. The film opens with Gandhi's election as Prime Minister in 1966. She quickly proves to be a charismatic and popular leader, but her popularity begins to wane in the early 1970s due to a number of factors, including economic problems, corruption scandals, and political opposition. In 1975, Gandhi's government is accused of rigging elections in Gujarat. Facing the threat of being overthrown, Gandhi declares the Emergency and suspends civil liberties. She arrests thousands of her political opponents, including journalists, activists, and student leaders.
