Story

Doli is a 1975 Hindi film, directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee. It tells the story of Manju (Moushumi Chatterjee), a naive young woman, who has been married off to an affluent family in India. When she arrives, she is welcomed graciously by her in-laws and husband, Shashi (Sanjeev Kumar). However, things quickly change when Manju's mother-in-law begins to resent her presence and the attention that she receives from Shashi. The situation worsens as Manju finds out that Shashi has been having an affair with his secretary, and the two of them have a child together. Manju must now decide whether to stay in this unhappy marriage or to find her own way in the world. In the end, she chooses the latter and decides to leave her husband. Doli is a social drama that explores the struggles of a woman facing an arranged marriage in a male-dominated society. Through Manju's journey, the film highlights the need for women to have autonomy and independence in making their own decisions.
