Story

Arth (The Meaning) is a 1982 Hindi drama film directed and co-written by Mahesh Bhatt. It stars Shabana Azmi, Kulbhushan Kharbanda and Raj Kiran in pivotal roles. The movie tells the story of Pooja (Shabana Azmi), a woman struggling with her husband's extramarital affair and her own sense of self-worth. She meets an aspiring actor named Inder (Raj Kiran) and the two become friends. Meanwhile, Pooja's husband, Shiv (Kulbhushan Kharbanda), struggles with his guilt and the temptation to return to his mistress. In the end, Pooja chooses to stand up for herself, divorcing Shiv and starting a new life with Inder. The movie explores themes of adultery, identity, self-respect and redemption. Through its narrative, it encourages audiences to move past their pain and find the courage to take control of their lives.
